As you may remember, I was fortunate enough to receive an appointment to the US Military Academt at West Point. After graduating as a 2LT in 1967, I served with the Army in Germany, Viet Nam and the Pentagon. A week after graduation, I married an Italian girl from New Jersey. We had 3 kids - 2 boys and a girl (Brennan, Andre & Michaela). Sadly, our marriage ended after 20 years (1987), but I was firmly planted in New Jersey by then. Three years later in 1990, I married a wonderful woman named Sue (another Italian girl from New Jersey). Sue was the "Love of my Life" and we had 18 wonderful years together. Sue and I shared every part of our lives from yard/garden work, Army football games, country & western line dancing to teaching Children's Church and serving in our local Baptist church (Sue as Church treasurer and me as Sunday School Leader and Church Trustee). Yes, there are some good Baptist churches in New Jersey... Tragically, Sue was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in Feb 2007 and after 2 surgeries, numerous chemo regimes and a courageous fight, she lost her battle with cancer on Dec 3, 2008. I know she is in heaven now and is not in pain or suffering, but her death severly tested my faith and left a huge hole in my heart. Currently, I am the AWANA Commander of the youth (K to 6th Grade) program at our church with some 60+ kids and 20 adult and teen leaders. In addition, I serve on the Board of the local Salvation Army and assisted in building a shelter for homeless men, many of whom are Viet Nam vets. Five of Sue's siblings, 16 nieces and nephews, and my 3 children and 3 grand children all live within a 2 hours radius of me, so you understand why I am stuck in New Jersey. I would love to return to North Carolina, but all my family ties are here in NJ. I try to make one or two trips to North Carolina every year to vist one aging aunt and some cousins as well as Bill & Katherine Petree, Ken Dawson and Chip Morgan. On the career front, after getting out of the Army in 1971, I was hired by Johnson & Johnson (1971-1976) and became involved with logistics, transportation and physical distribution. In 1976, I accepted a position as a Distribution Manager in New York City, went to night school at Fordham Ujiversity to earn an MBA and became VP Operations for Saxon Paper-NY (1976-1982). Saxon Corp. declared bankruptcy in 1982 and I moved on to work for L'Oreal of Paris back in New Jersey. My tenure with L'Oreal was 14 years (1982-1996) and I became the AVP of Operations & Distribution responsible for all their customer service and distribution centers through the entire US. In 1996, I accepted what I thought would be a great position with Kodak in Durham, NC. Unfortunately my boss turned out to be unbearable and after 18 months we returned to New Jersey, where Sue's job as Corp Tax Director for L'Oreal was still open. I worked as a stock broker for Prudential and a consultant before landing the best job of my life - Director of Operations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of NJ. What an opportunity I had to help the families of critically ill and dying kids - so rewarding to give them a wish that the families could remember and cherish for ever. I would still be there, except for the new president, brought in in 2003, who decided to get rid of everyone over 50 so he could build his own team. Since then, I have been working as a consultant and a recruiter for a small company owned by another West Point graduate called Academy Associates & Recruiters. The job market is terrible and I have not made a placement in 3 years, but it gave me the opportinity to work from home and to be with Sue 24/7 during all chemo and other treatments. This spring and summer, I worked for the US CENSUS Bureau which proved to not only be interesting and challenging, but also fun and exciting. Now I am back in my recruiting role. I am really excited about this reunion and am anxiously looking forward to seeing everyone. I have not seen most of you since our last reunion in '93?!? You probably don't remember, but I love to dance and hope we have some good 'ole 60's music to "boogie to". Since I am alone, I will need some of you single ladies to fill up my "dance card". Who knows, maybe I will find romance at our reunion! Many thanks to the committee and all of you who have made this reunion possible. I know you have worked hard and I appreciate it very much.... |

After Reynolds, I graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC with a major in studio art and taught art for several years at the elementary and junior high level. Mike Thrift and I were married in 1968 and have two daughters, Allyson and Amy. We lived in Biloxi, MS, Aiken, SC, Greenville, NC and back to Winston-Salem in 1976. We were divorced in the early 80's, and I went back to school at Guilford Tech for an Associate Degree in Graphic Design, (I graduated again in '87, with my girls at my side, exactly 20 years after my first degree.) While raising the two girls (and a few Shih Tzu doggies,) I worked in Interior Design, Graphic Design (ad agency and corporate) and taught art in both public and private schools. For many years, I've taught art classes in my home studio to both children and adults. Who said "Old age is for Sissies?" My mid-life adventures have included "section hiking" the Appalachian Trail with friends (we've covered GA, NC, TN, and most of VA.,) traveling to some awesome places and scuba diving . . . yes, with sharks. In 1992, several of us RJR gals reconnected and reminisced as we spent some time together at the beach. We have made it an annual event to get together, and it has been such a blessing to rekindle our friendships. Ten years ago we suffered the tragic loss of our oldest daughter, Allyson, due to a sudden brain aneurysm. She was working in Seattle counseling teen-agers. Our younger daughter, Amy lives in Chattanooga with her husband, Drew, Jonathan (10), Salem (7) and Owen (3). All grandchildren are adopted (Jonathan and Owen from Chattanooga and Salem from China) and, as you can imagine, are the loves of my life. I've been back in Winston-Salem for the past 42 years. At our last reunion (50th) I re-connected with Ed Marion and we began "long distance" dating since he lived in New Jersey. We were married in June of 2015 and are happily living here in Winston-Salem . . . I certainly discovered the advantage of attending these reunions! :) . . . Now I have 2 more grandchildren to love and spoil. Ed's son, Brennan and his wife, Jenny live in Pennsylvania with their 2 girls, Piper (13) and Talula (6). I am enjoying the luxury of total retirement from teaching art in the public schools but am still enjoying teaching a few children and adult art classes in my home. I am blessed to have a little extra time to pursue my passion for painting. I have worked in many media, but most of my recent work is in pastel and oil. You may check it out on my website, www.marshathrift.com and link to my blog. In my spare (?) time, I enjoy walking, yoga and Zumba Gold (wouldn't Mr. Mayer be impressed?) . . . photography, scrapbooking, painting, and (last but certainly not least,) my grandchildren. I am so looking forward to our reunion in October. Thanks to all of you who are making it possible. |

I spent my first 2 years in college at Mars Hill and graduated from Appalachian State in 1967.I taught first grade in Gastonia, NC,for 3 years. It was there that another teacher introduced me to her nephew, who was just returning from Germany, after spending 4 years in the Army.Five months later we were married, and celebrated our 40th anniversary last August. We lived in Anderson,SC,Jerry's hometown for 3 years,as he returned to school, and I taught first, and later, third grade. Our daughter, Jennifer, was born there. After Jerry graduated from Furman, we moved to Jefferson,GA,for his job.Our son,Graham, was born a few years later. After teaching 4th and 5th grade for the last 27 years of my career,I retired in 2002. I continued to teach half-days,until I decided I no longer wanted to set the alarm. It is nice to roll over as the school bus passes my bedroom window at 6:45 AM! We have a 17 year-old grandson who still enjoys visiting us,thank goodness. I spend my time reading, eating out with friends, taking a couple of beach trips a year, and yes,I confess,Facebooking. Hope to see lots of great pictures of the reunion! |

Comment: After graduating from RJR, I attended Meredith College and worked there in the Admissions Office for a couple of years after earning my degree in 1967. In 1969, I married and moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where my two sons were born. After seven years in Louisiana, we moved back to Raleigh where I have continued to live. My former husband and I divorced in 1990. Both my sons have settled in Raleigh - my older son was a civil engineer who gave up that profession to follow his passion for cooking. He is now one of the chef owners at Globe in Raleigh. My younger son (also a Civil Engineer) is married and the father of a son (age 4) and a daughter (age 1). As many of you, I am sure, I have dealt with the ups and downs of life.....my biggest challenge has been living with Parkinson's Disease with which I was diagnosed in 1996. My greatest joy has been watching my children and now my grandchildren grow and mature. I enjoy reading, spending time with friends, and growing roses. Many thanks to the Reunion Committee for providing this forum for us to catch up with our classmates. |

After RJR, I attended UNC. I was probably the last one to be accepted in my class; and Ms. Edwards told me I’d better sit on the front row! Well, I did and graduated in ‘67 with a BS in Business Administration. While my grades were decent, the time I spent cleaning up after roommate Bill Benton probably kept me from reaching my full potential. His mom always told me that Bill should pay me 10% of his wages for life for my custodial efforts, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe I'm in his will? After the Army, I received an MS in Real Estate and Urban Planning from American University in Washington, DC. (still sitting on the first row, Ms. Edwards) and have been involved in real estate ever since, actively participating in the REALTOR Association, serving as president of my local and state associations. As Cherie and I move closer to retirement, we are spending more time at our "retirement" home in Florida and our condo on the Costa del Sol in Spain. (Cherie studied in Madrid in 1966 and we have been going back for over forty years.) Besides travel, I have been actively swimming for years, including an annual 4.4 mile swim across the Chesapeake Bay from 1996-2006. In 2007, I walked a 530-mile pilgrimage route across northern Spain (El Camino de Santiago) in memory of our Spanish Godson, Alvaro who was killed in a car accident in Spain in 1997, just three weeks after graduating from high school in the US with our son Zachary, and having lived with us for the previous two years. A pilgrim's prayer that served me on The Camino and which I have continued to pray every day since: |

My year as an exchange student at Reynolds in Winston-Salem – among the Moravians and the pine trees - is a period in my life that I still look back upon with great pleasure and gratitude. I enjoyed thoroughly meeting you all. I have been back to Winston-Salem once – a very short visit, some 20 years ago – where I managed – an early Sunday morning - to find my way to R. J. Reynolds school - as well as to the 1028 South Hawthorne Road where I stayed with the Bell-family. ( I have been visiting the US quite a few times during the years gone. Most of my longer stops, however, have been in the Atlanta or the Phoenix area, where I still have close relatives, cousins etc... On working- and study-trips, I have had primarily a base with the Gannet-chain of newspapers in White Plains and the Philadelphia Inquirer.) I have spent my working life in the mass media. I graduated from The Norwegian School of Journalism in 1966, and up to 1973, I worked as a reporter. Between the years '73 and '91 – I had the position of a editor-in-chief of different newspapers around the country (the last 11 years in my hometown Stavanger) – and from '92 on, I`ve been hosting a daily, two hour long talk show on the national radio, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. (My first radio appearance was by the way, at the WTOB in Winston-Salem.....) In between, I have been teaching journalism at university level both in Norway and Sweden, and writing several books on local history etc. (I checked myself on the Norwegian Wikipedia and found that they have been counting most of my books....) I hope to be able to join the reunion – I have a little problem though, a Norwegian oilwell-service-company will be celebrating an anniversary and presenting a book – which I have written – about the reunion-time. At the moment they haven`t set the exact time for the presentation, so I cross my fingers and toes..... Stavanger – my hometown and where I now live, is the center of the Norwegian oil industry. Oil companies from all over the world have their head offices for their activities in the North Sea located in the Stavanger-area. We therefore have an American school – from 1 to 12 th grade – an English school, a French etc. Since Phillips found oil in the late sixties, the old canning town has turned into quite an international arena. I am married, we have 4 kids ( in their mid-late 30 to early 40 – but still kids...) and 7 grandchildren, ranging from 8 to 14 years. (I dont have many pictures of myself, so I enclose one from an article in a newspaper the day I bid my radio listeners good bye.... ) We`ll keep in touch. When I left Winston-Salen midsummer '63, we weren`t allowed to enter the US till at least 2-3 years after we had returned to our homes; we shouldn`t become Americans, but stay and study in our home countries, the AFS-organisation had decided.... Knowing that, I felt that I couldn`t get to close to anybody in those days, however, you all are all still joining me on my trips down memory lane.... Hope to see you all Engwall/Gary

I recently retired from nursing at Baptist Hospital. I have two birth children and two stepchildren - and six grandchildren! I am enjoying my free time reading, traveling, and rooting for UNC. I volunteer at the Shepherd's Center, taking clients to doctors' appointments. You may remember me as "Sue" but all my friends and family have always called me "Soula" (pronounced "Sue-La"). |
